Proscar 5 mg (finasteride) is a prescription medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It works by blocking the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is responsible for growth of the prostate gland. This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet and is typically taken once a day with or without food. The usual starting dose is one 5 mg tablet taken once daily, with or without meals. The recommended duration of treatment is 6 months or longer. This medication should not be taken by women. Possible side effects include decreased sex drive, physical or mental changes, and chest pain.
